Officer left with fractured eye socket, nerve damage after water boy assault

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens has strongly condemned the actions of a 14-year-old "water boy" accused of assaulting a police officer in Atlanta. According to investigators, the boy hit the officer in the face, causing severe injuries, including a fractured eye socket and nerve damage that could lead to blindness. While it's unclear if any of the teens selling bottled water in the area were involved in the assault, police say the officer saw the boy selling drinks in the middle of the road and approached him, causing the teen to run. The officer caught up with him at a nearby MARTA station, where the attack took place.

Atlanta has been dealing with a growing issue of aggressive and sometimes violent incidents involving so-called water boys since the start of the pandemic. The city's mayor and police department have been working on solutions to address this illegal activity, including a successful summer youth employment program that connects at-risk teens with private businesses willing to hire them.

The 14-year-old boy who assaulted the officer was arrested and faces charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, terroristic threats, obstruction, pedestrians in the roadway, pedestrian soliciting business, and littering. The mayor and police department urges residents to avoid supporting the illegal activities of water boys and instead direct them to legitimate employment opportunities.
