Reports alleging that former President Donald Trump caused damage to White House plumbing by flushing documents down the toilet have led to renewed speculation about his conduct while in office.

According to an upcoming book by Maggie Haberman in the New York Times, Trump repeatedly blocked the White House toilet with paper, Axios reported. In response, Trump denied the claim, stating that it was “completely untrue and simply fabricated” in an effort to discredit Haberman’s book.

This revelation comes amidst reports that Trump kept other documents from his presidency, including potentially classified materials, which has prompted investigations by the Department of Justice and a House committee into whether he violated the Presidential Records Act. Allegations that he disposed of documents in the toilet may lend credibility to these claims, as Haberman said that staff had found pieces of paper blocking the plumbing in the presidential residence.

The flushing of documents also led to complaints from Trump about the effectiveness of low-flow toilets, which he blamed on the Energy Policy Act signed by George HW Bush in 1992 that limited the amount of water used per flush to 1.6 gallons. Trump claimed that Americans had to flush “10 times, 15 times, as opposed to once” and that he had directed the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate the issue.

In addition to the toilet story, Haberman’s book details the rise and fall of Trump’s presidency and is set for release on October 4th.
