Woman raped twice after Louisiana deputies sent her undercover in unmonitored drug deal

Woman raped twice after Louisiana deputies sent her undercover in unmonitored drug deal

A female informant working with law enforcement to buy drugs from a known dealer, in Mississippi, was sexually assaulted by the dealer in Louisiana in January 2021. During the attack, the woman was not monitored by law enforcement and had only passive recording devices. The police did not consider such an attack and could not transmit the operation in real-time to their monitoring station. The woman was later found to have been sexually assaulted and forced to perform oral sex on the dealer. Her assailant was arrested and charged with second-degree rape, false imprisonment, and distribution of methamphetamine. The case highlights the dangers that confidential informants face and the perils of working off criminal charges in these arrangements. The case also highlights the vast disparities in law enforcement's undercover playbook, with many agencies lacking the resources to properly train officers or monitor informant drug buys. The case prompted the department to update its equipment to monitor transactions in real-time.
