Trump Supporters descend on Mar A Lago to protest FBI raid

Donald Trump Jr. took to Twitter to criticize the Department of Justice (DOJ) under President Biden, accusing it of targeting political enemies, similar to the actions of third-world countries. Trump Jr.'s remarks came as his family tried to portray a search of Mar-a-Lago as part of a Democratic effort to prevent Donald Trump from winning another term in 2024.

The search in question was related to the former president taking classified documents from the White House to his residence in Florida after his presidency ended. The National Archives and Records Administration discovered classified material in 15 boxes at the residence, leading to an investigation by the DOJ.

Representative Carolyn B. Maloney of New York, the Chairwoman of the investigation, said that former presidents have a duty to protect America's national security and that allegations of mishandling classified information should be scrutinized. However, Trump and his allies have accused the Biden administration of instigating the search, despite the fact that FBI Director Christopher Wray was appointed by Trump and previously worked in a Republican-led Justice Department.

Eric Trump stated that the boxes containing documents were moved from the White House on Inauguration Day, along with other items, and that they ended up at Mar-a-Lago. The Trump family has criticized the unannounced search, with Donald Trump referring to the raid as unnecessary and inappropriate.

Federal law prohibits the removal of classified documents to unauthorized locations and the mishandling of such records, with penalties of up to five years in prison. Although Trump could argue that he had the authority to declassify information as president, the removal of documents to his residence after his presidency ended could still be considered a violation of federal law.
